Dreadlock Extensions: Some of My Best Work Yet!

by Mona-Lisa on July 12, 2010

As you all know, I love creating fresh new protective styles that let you stay fabulous while you protect your strands and retain length. I quickly fell head over heels in love with the idea of doing temporary dreadlock extensions that look 100% legit as a protective style.

After doing tons of research for tutorials on youtube I found most of them pretty lacking and more geared towards nubian twists; which are really nice looking, but look super shiny and pretty blatantly fake. So I took small tips from several tutorials but when I got down to it I found that I had to come up with my own techniques for this style and thats just what I did!

This was my first attempt at loc extensions and it was a raving success. I was really happy with the results and did them to be removable.

My friend Makini is having an absolute blast with them she washes almost every day. Her hair is completely protected and surrounded by the extension hair so she’s not concerned with her hair rubbing against anything and drying out. She even has the freedom to sleep with her hair fully loose if she likes.  The pix are next followed by the FAQ’s and their answers enjoy! ;)

FAQ’s

Are they permanent?

There are both permanent and temporary versions of this style, that is completely your choice.

Do you use Glue?

I do not use glues of any kind in my loc extensions.

Do I have to use Human hair?

We can use either human or synthetic hair, most of my clients seem to prefer human, this set I did on Makini was with Synthetic hair.

Is this style okay if I have shorter hair/transitioning hair?

This style would work just as well for short/newly natural/transitioning hair….there are even relaxed ladies getting this done as a protective style.

Will it look real?

I believe the pictures speak for themselves. It looks 100% legit, you go from your current look to looking like you’ve had locs for a decade overnight….its pretty awesome

Can I wash my hair with them in?

Absolutely Makini washes almost every day with no issues

How long can this last?

You could keep the temporary or permanent locs in for as long as you like. So that can mean a few months, a few years or indefinitely. If it is just a temporary protective style, try not to exceed 5 months (YES they last that long). The convenient aspect is that your new-growth will blend flawlessly with the extension hair…as it is the same texture.

Can I go in the water at the beach with this?

Yes you can absolutely go to the beach and get drenched in the water with this.

What Brand/How many packs of hair did it take to do?

That depends on length, I will let you know what your specific needs are for your unique style.

How long does this style take to complete?

This style takes allll day long to do lol you have to start in the morning and be finished by the night

This is one of many styles I’ve been doing this summer I have SO much more in store (including the redesign of my site!) and I plan to share them all with you! Let me know what you think!

Thanks for reading! Let me know what you think of my work in the comments! :)

I Made a Wig from Scratch!

by Mona-Lisa on May 31, 2010

Hey guys! So my Cousin decided she wants to enjoy the feel of having bangs and jet black hair without changing her own actual hair so she asked me to make her a wig and thats exactly what I did. It was a quickweave based on a stocking cap. We used human hair blend cheap hair and I’m happy with the results for my first try. I am making it my top priority to start rolling out tutorials for you guys regularly and I promise they’re coming up soon! Without further ado….here’s the pix!

My First Attempt at Crochet Braids!

by Mona-Lisa on January 24, 2010

These are crochet braids I did on my mom! I must say it looks fab! Its an excellent protective style which will be great for her as I’ll be away to school again by the end of this weekend :’( .

So as many of you know, I’m striving for long term low maintenence protective styling to achieve your length goal. The protective style I found and fell in love with were crochet braids. I chose them because they give you a very “done” polished look while protecting your hair, they’re quick and easy to do most ladies claimed it took them an average of 3-4 hours so I was excited to try them. Well my mom went from store to store and couldn’t find a latch hook anywhere :- so we got creative and I pretty much did this style with nothing more then a bobby pin 8) lol I used FreeTress Water Wave Hair in number 4 and a little 4/30 to incorporate the golden highlights.

Its doesnt look like much hair in the pack but its called bulk for a reason people! lol to do her hair it took just 2.5 packs it was about $6 each. The hair frizzes very easily when you seperate each cluster so to tame that and define the curl I used some cheapo Ampro Clear Ice Gel I had lying around on each piece and it worked beautifully very little flaking and light-medium hold. I was so glad to finally find a use or that. If you want more of an afro look you can simply leave the hair frizzy and you’ll get the full effect you want. Without further ado…..heres the pix!

Enjoy! :)

I started by Cornrowing her hair while wet. I used a very small amount of IC fantasia gel on her edges and the first half inch of her roots. On the rest of her hair I used Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Cream Moisturizer for each section and re-wetted as I went along with a spray bottle.

On both ladies I used nothing but my trusty Eco Styler Gel, some fast food straws, bobby pins to secure, tailcomb and fine-toothed comb.

The first straw set I did was on my beautiful friend Makini her hair type is 3c

She’s an amazing make-up artist you can reach her at her site www.fabfacesmakeup.com

This is her before shot:

The Second set I did on my mom who has shorter hair, she went for a fuller look…and she’s a 4a…by the way I am also a type 4a and my results with a straw set is on the top right of the banner…. ENJOY! :)

BMPers, I’d like to introduce you to a past love of mine we were recently reunited……the Andis Colorwaves 1875 Watt Tourmaline-Ionic Blow Dryer!!!

This is an excellent blowdryer that allows type 4′s like me to skip the hotcomb step and go straight to flat ironing which is awesome and time saving. Here’s a before and after with this blowdryer with the comb attachment on my hair:

Lisa's Pictures 180

Before: This is my damp hair unraveled from the braid I wash it in.

______________________________________________________

After the Andis Blowdryer:Lisa's Pictures 181 Smooth very straight, very few shed hairs and really fast drying time.

I was really pleased with the results, it dries your hair quickly but doesnt leave it feeling dried out. It leaves your hair feeling very smooth, I felt it helped my hair’s cuticle lay down my hair was light bouncy and very straight for just a blowdryer. It has a very powerful stream of air and it is very loud, however it gets the job done and does it well. This product gets 5 stars from me.

Lisa's Pictures 158Yaaay! :)

I used the Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Moisturizing cream for the first time and it is hands down the best moisturizer I’ve ever used, it gave my hair wonderful slip and had *just* the right amount of oil, I lost very little hair and combing was a breeze. I HIGHLY recommend it.

Tips for Transitioning from Relaxed to Natural

by Mona-Lisa on July 31, 2009

The easiest way to transition is to simply do what is known as “The Big Chop” and chop off your relaxed hair and start out with a fresh head of coily kinky goodness J

However if you prefer not to “chop” and you want to do a long term transition as I did, here are some tips on how to go about it:

- Start washing your hair in medium sized braids this will GREATLY reduce or completely eliminate the issue of tangles especially if you plan on straightening your hair during your transition

- Get twists extensions rather than micro braids

  1. With twists you can get the $3 Kanekalon hair with no damage to your hair whereas when you get braids you have to get human hair or else your hair will break off
  2. You can take twists out very easily on your own within an hour to two hours time, I don’t think I even need to tell yall how different that is from the endeavor of taking some micro’s out!! Lol
  3. You get awesome growth and length retention from this style and it’s a great way to give your hair a break from daily manipulation for a while and you’ll be pleasantly surprised when you take them out

- You WILL have moments of weakness where you feel like why don’t I just slap some relaxer on here and give up! But believe me, if you hold on till that day you’re rocking a fro so huge you stop people in their tracks….you’ll be glad you made the transition.
