Hey yall! These are a set of gorgeous curly crochets done on a lady doctor client who wanted a protective style that looked like her natural curly texture. She seems plucked out of a medical drama….she’s so darn pretty! Beauty, Brains and a fellow Haitian! It was a pleasure to meet her and the result blew even me away. This was done with freetress water wave hair in color 1b/2.
Let me know what you think!

Tree Braids was a protective style I’d been looking forward to tackling for some time now. My mom didn’t want any straight hair or loose curls…she definitely wanted kinky or curly….so we decided to use Brazilian braid hair in Auburn and Brown and it came out absolutely spectacular.
One thing I love about the technique of tree braiding is that it provides a much smoother flatter finish then other techniques making the extension hair appear to be the persons own naturally growing hair that much more.
Let me know what you think of the look! Here are the pix

This is a recent style I did for a beautiful young lady named Natalie. Curly Crochet braids….we did them Waist Length for her.
I didn’t take a pic of my braiding pattern but it was essentially the same way you’d braid hair for a weave…I made sure all her hair was braided down so it would have a beautiful smooth look to it. Here are the pix…enjoy!

This has been an absolutely wonderful month and the freetress water wave hair has aged like a fine wine. I’m actually going on 5 weeks and I’m still getting compliments (not to mention catcalls ) left right and center. I went to the beauty supply last week to get some more of the hair to redo them for my mom and the ladies at the beauty supply were in amazement, one of them stepped out from behind the counter and told me how gorgeous it looks, her eyes were gaping lol it was really nice.
I had an adorable moment with my brother after having them in for a week he turned to me and said I really like your hair….is that a protective style? I was grinning from ear to ear I was like “You really listen to me! Thats so sweet” and he was like “yea ok relax” lol that was sweet.
One day on the train this one girl got on and the second she did she said wow I love your hair and immediately asked to touch it lol not mention all the kind words and encouragement from my friends, family and all of you lovely readers its been a blast and I’m gonna just reinstall them.
Okay heres what I’ve learned about the hair over this month:
- You can definitely wash it the traditional way…with shampoo….just focus the shampoo on your scalp where all the buildup is and rise. Dont rub or tangle the hair just gently get your fingers between the braids and rub, not too vigorously but just enough.
- You can condition the hair too
- I wash weekly add a quarter size of conditioner to the hair a generous amount to my cornrows add a heaping handful of gel and let it air dry….its awesome
- I moisturize the cornrows themselves with something light like conditioner and a little extra virgin coconut oil…I’ll be using Organic Root Stimulators Olive Cream Moisturizer to moisturize after a wash for my next install.
- Daily you should shake the hair out in the morning and keep the curls separated from eachother….this part is hard to explain and thats why theres a video coming down the pike for this style.
- You must go on matt patrol weekly. Every week you should go thru the hair and search for small matts when you find them simply cut them out to keep the hair well defined and fresh
- If you have really short hair at your edges then you should add a tiny amount of hair to start off the cornrow and anchor the hair better, make sure its a very small undetectable amount.
- To make it last longer as a style it would be a good idea to cornrow the back in continuous circle and the front straight back….that way you can redo the front without having to redo the entirety, this is also helpful for those like me with longer hair to have more of their hair away and protected from the elements.
- You *must* sleep with a satin cap every night to keep it in the best condition. I grab both halves of my hair criss cross them across the back of my head…throw my satin cap over it at night and sleep however I please.
Well without further ado, here are the pix of my crochet braids over this past month:

BMPers, I’d like to introduce you to a past love of mine we were recently reunited……the Andis Colorwaves 1875 Watt Tourmaline-Ionic Blow Dryer!!!
This is an excellent blowdryer that allows type 4′s like me to skip the hotcomb step and go straight to flat ironing which is awesome and time saving. Here’s a before and after with this blowdryer with the comb attachment on my hair:
Before: This is my damp hair unraveled from the braid I wash it in.
After the Andis Blowdryer: Smooth very straight, very few shed hairs and really fast drying time.
I was really pleased with the results, it dries your hair quickly but doesnt leave it feeling dried out. It leaves your hair feeling very smooth, I felt it helped my hair’s cuticle lay down my hair was light bouncy and very straight for just a blowdryer. It has a very powerful stream of air and it is very loud, however it gets the job done and does it well. This product gets 5 stars from me.
Hey my lovely readers! Well I finally straightened my hair for the first time in what seems like forever.
My hurr got that SWANG again!!!
I was tired of the pixies after having them in 3 1/2 weeks they held up really nicely
But I was overdue for a trim and ready to see my true length so I took em down.
I tend to only leave “long term styles” in for three weeks max before I’m bored and ready to switch it up
The crimped effect is actually really cute….I would’ve left it like this had it not been for the accumulated dead hair hidden in there lol
The Pixies held up wonderfully and had surprising unanticipated benefits to my hair that I noticed after the takedown. I anticipated the length retention but I didn’t anticipate the increase in thickness, I’ve never needed much help in the thickness department, I did the pixie braids to give my hair a break from manipulation (combing, brushing, styling, heat) and to retain the length I gained in the month I wore them and it did just that, they did everything I anticipated but my hair was considerably thicker once I took them down….it was a nice surprise, my hair had thrived under that zero manipulation regimen it was on. So thats definitely something to consider if you ever wanna give this look a try.
My regimen for straightening:
- Applied Extra Virgin Olive Oil Generously before Shampooing
- Braided the hair in eight sections (while still tangled)
- Went to the sink NourishSpa Shampoo & Conditioner in hand put the shampoo only on my scalp and used the SPECTACULAR condish *incredible slip!* on my hair and GENTLY detangled.
- Rebraided as I went then put and GENEROUS amount of LeKair Cholesterol throughout my hair with a bit of aphogee 2 minute keratin reconstructer Deep conditioned under the dryer for 35 minutes then rinsed out
Here’s a Shot of My Texture:
- Sprayed my hair with a new leave-in I didnt like lol (I would recommend using my usual –> dilluted 1-5 in a spray bottle sprayed on each section of damp hair before blow-drying) and began to blow dry my hair braid by braid with a very moderately powered blow dryer.
Lightly Blown Out:
- Took my ceramic flat iron and alternated between 360 and 395 tending more toward 360 (I decided to do only moderate heat tonight)
Here’s a shot of me in the middle of the straightening session:
- The End result: Swingin Swangin hair!!!
I guess my new goal is MidBackLength blunt….but I’m very much satisfied with where I’m at right now

You gotta have your ceramic Flat iron!!! It must must MUST be a 100% fully ceramic flat Iron when your striaghtening. Remember how badly those press jobs your mom did when you were little came out? Especially the ones from the stove.
Here’s why:
a) Metal heats unevenly which results in hot spots which can cause burnt off patches
b) The metal never seals the hair’s cuticle in the striaightening process leaving it vulverable to frizz at any point
Always buy a flat iron that states that it has 100% ceramic plates they have to tell the truth on that on the packaging….many of them when you really read the packaging on the front or in the back it will state that all they have are ceramic coated plates…thats not good enough the coating will peel off within the first three uses.
On the more affordable low end the conair flat iron they sell in the drug store or beauty supply store for like $60 it was one of the best I’ve used does the job gets the hair straight its durable and doesnt damage on the higher end I’ve heard great things about Sedu and Maxiglide.
I think far too often, we complain about our hair not being where we wish it was.
We say my hair is the worst, my hair is so this my hair is so that….. I can’t stand my hair.
When we know its an over the top exaggeration. Negativity and proclaiming what your hair can’t do wont help you reach your goals.
Let’s take this time out now to give thanks for the hair we have. The hair we were blessed with, lets take this moment to emphasize the positive, what we love that our hair does, what we love that our hair has the ability to do.
Humidity, the media our culture and our foremothers told us its the worst and it ruins hairstyles, but thats not the complete truth. Humidity ruins your hair style only if you let it. On my heathy hair journey if theres anything I learned it’s that you need to work with instead of fighting against your [...]
